Verification that actually verifies

Signup sends a one-time code by email and the account is not active until it is entered. That one step removes the junk accounts and typo'd addresses that otherwise fill a user sheet, and it confirms the address before you ever need to reach that person.

Password recovery works the same way: the user requests a reset, receives a code, and sets a new password themselves. Without it, every forgotten password becomes a message to you and a manual edit in the sheet — the reason most home-grown login systems quietly fail after a few months.
